NY Naval Ensign Flag
In 1775, as the Revolution took hold, New Yorkers hauled down the British flag and raised a white flag with a single black beaver at its center; flown from the armed ships of New York as a break from the Crown. The beaver traced back to the Dutch settlers of New Netherland, a symbol of the fur trade that built the colony into a city. No documented illustration of the original has ever been found, but the beaver never left. It's still the official state animal of New York and appears on the seal of New York City to this day.
